Yes, Amy- we have found b-sides across the country that we would visit again and rank as beautiful as some of the “bucket list” classics (though Crater Lake and Mt Hood remains on our bucket list for the next pass, having not managed them this time...and maybe I will get to meet you in person!
Amie, love your depiction of the crowd types and how much time you have to wait to get ‘the money shot’. And yes B-sides are most memorable.
We will be embarking soon on a much much abridged version of this later this month. Crater Lake, Mt Ranier, Olympic in 12 days. If anyone has any must do’s or skips for two decently in shape low-landers - we would be interested...
Hi Jon! Thanks for the kind words and reading along on our Journey. Glad you are taking an adventure to the PNW! Mt Rainier wasn’t on our itinerary on this lap (gotta leave things for NEXT lap!). Crater was, BUT the huge amounts of snow/precipitation this spring in the PNW (record breaking amounts) prevented us from making it. Also for next time. I will say that will be a VERY busy stop. All of our Oregon friends tell us this, but no doubt worth it. As for Olympic we spend a fair amount of time in this area traversed the whole ring and camped in several places. This place is MAGIC! We were there in May- a shoulder season so it was probably quieter. Happy to send you a list of some of our favorite places hikes. DM me here amiebherman@gmail.com and I will send you our greatest hits list!
Definitely in the road less traveled group! Nothing like the sound of a noisy stream to put you to sleep. Fantastic photos. Since you’ve done so much hiking, what type of footwear do you recommend?
By the way, our Van Lab kit was delivered yesterday. Glad my wife likes jigsaw puzzles.
Hi Jeff! Yay, a b-side fan! Congratulations on getting the kit and starting that process (lol! Jigsaw puzzle, indeed!) as for hiking footwear, we both wear full hiking boots (ankle high support). We have low hikers but use them only on short jaunts. Anything more than 3 miles and it’s the boots. We also carry poles and crampons for tougher or snowy conditions. The brand that works for me is Keen and Tom uses Salomon Quest 04 (highly rated) but I think it’s worth trying on several pairs because it’s driven by your foot shape and preference. We also swear by Wright brand socks which are “double layered” so they give/slide a bit as you move to prevent friction and blisters. On long hikes I carry moleskin if I think I am getting a hot spot. Luckily I have only had to use it once, early on, when I was “still building my hiking feet.”
Beautiful. In our years of living out West, we’ve come to truly love the “B”
Places that the tourists don’t really know about.💜🙌🏽

Just like the old 45 rpm records (l'm showing my age), the B side was sometimes a hidden jewel that equaled or superseded the A side!
Forgive the delay! I loved 45’s and the b-side “jewels” in music and parks- fun to feel as if you discovered it yourself!
